Welcome!

The Chester County Trail Club is a group of individuals who enjoy hiking, backpacking and other outdoor recreational activities. Club members also participate in building, maintaining and advocating for the protection of trails for public use.

Whether you've logged a zillion miles or have never been on a hike before, you are sure to find something that piques your interest in our extensive schedule.

CCTC schedules hikes throughout the week as well as a monthly Full Moon hike. All hikes are led by member volunteers. The hike description includes the degree of difficulty so you can choose one that matches your ability. Check out the Hiking Tips page for detailed information.

Club members also enjoy many social gatherings such as the annual banquet that honors those who have hiked the most miles during the year.

    Meet HL Ingrid Cantarella-Fox (484-432-2150) for this moderate hike in a nature preserve known for its birds. The Preserve is maintained by Natural Lands.

    Directions: Take Route 252 South from Paoli to Palmers Mill Rd. Approximately 8 miles. Left on Palmers Mill Rd. for 0.2 miles. Go right into parking for Natural Lands.

    Meet HL Lori Kier for a 2-mile hike at Historic Poole Forge Park in Narvon, PA (https://historicpooleforge.org/), a 26-acre site with a preserved historic ironmaster's mansion, nature trail, many beautiful gardens and a covered bridge across the Conestoga River.

    Address:  Historic Poole Forge Park 1940 Main Street, Narvon, PA 17555 (Main Street is the same as State Route 23.)

    We will meet at the main parking area just off Route 23 

    After taking a level loop hike through the macadam and meadow areas of this beautiful Park, we will then head to Lapp Valley Farm (located at 244 Mentzer Road, New Holland, about 15 minutes from the Park), where we may be able to watch Jersey cows being milked. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the freshest and creamiest ice cream you ever tasted. Lapp Valley Farm also has a small store with dairy products to go, so consider bringing a cooler and ice if you think you might want to purchase something to take home.

    Meet Hike Leaders Alison and Bob Gagnon 610-547-0034, robertgagnon@verizon.net, for a day hike on Section 1B of the Appalachian Trail in NJ and Pennsylvania. The hike is from the Kittatinney Point Visitors Center parking lot, NJ, to the Fox Gap Trailhead. This will be a shuttle hike.

    Location:  meet at the Fox Gap Trailhead at 8:30 AM for shuttle to the Kittatinney Point, NJ, Visitors Center parking lot.

    Directions: We will meet at 8:00 AM at the Appalachian Trail, Fox Gap Parking Area, PA-191, Bangor, PA 18013. GPS coordinates 40.9355, -75.1970. We will shuttle from there to the Kittatinney Point Visitors Center parking lot, Old Mine Road, Columbia, NJ.

    Carpool: those interested in carpooling, meet at 7:00 AM at Gateway Shopping Center, Swedesford Road, Wayne, outside of the Starbucks.

     Meet HL John Trexler, (484) 329-2350, for a walk through the village of Arden and surrounding woodlands.  Arden came to life as a Summer arts colony and Utopian community in 1900. Meet at the Arden Gild Hall. 

    Directions: Head south on U.2. 202. 0.7 miles past the Delaware line, turn left at the Rte. 92/Naamans Road traffic light.  In 0.9 miles (3rd traffic light), turn right onto Grubb Road.  Continue 2.5 miles on Grubb Road/Harvey Road, then turn right onto Orleans Road (4th traffic light).  Keep to the left at the fork in the road, and the Gild Hall will come up quickly on your left.

     Google Directions: From I-95 North towards Philadelphia Take Exit 17, head right on the ramp for PA-611 North towards Pattison Avenue (0.6 mi), Make a U Turn (0.3mi), Road name changes to South Broad Street (0.1 mi), Bear right, then bear right onto South Broad Street ( 0.4 mi), turn left onto Kitty Hawk Avenue ).

    Dee's directions: take the Scenic Route which involves going over the George Platt Bridge and a small lift bridge. From I-95 North towards Philadelphia use the right two lanes to take Exit 13 towards I-76 West (1.4 mi), Merge onto Penrose Avenue. Do not take Island Ave (2.0mi), Turn right onto South 26th Street (1.0 mi), Turn left onto Kitty Hawk  Avenue This hike will  involve seeing the past, present and future of the Philadelphia Naval Yard. This is an amazing historical and cultural area not to be missed.  You can bring your lunch or we can eat at one of the many different venues within the Navy Yard.

    Meeting Place Address: start at 1199 Kitty Hawk  Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19112. You will see an old red sign with the word  MIRAGE.  Make a right and keep going straight on south 11th street until you reach the end of the street,( Admiral Peary Way) turn left and follow the road along the river. You can park anywhere on the right side of the street.

    2026 HAM on the Appalachian Trail: sponsored by the Mountain Club of Maryland

    Serious Hikers: This hike is intended for the serious hiker who has done three or more hikes of 15 miles or more. At a bare minimum, hikers should be able to hike at a rate of 2.5 to 3 miles an hour for 14 hours over mountainous terrain.

    Checkpoints: There are 9 checkpoints along the way providing water/Gatorade and snacks to the hikers, including lunch food at the Washington Monument checkpoint which is the halfway mark (21 miles).

    Camp Round Meadow: Stay the night of May 22nd at the Catoctin Mountain Park, Camp Round Meadow (https://www.nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/camp-round-meadow.htm). Cost is included in the registration fee which is $60.00 plus fees.

    Directions: Take US-202 North toward King of Prussia. Using the right 3 lanes merge onto I-76 East toward Philadelphia East (5.0 mi.) Take exit 331B to merge onto I-476 North toward Plymouth Meeting (2.8 mi).  Take exit 18A toward Conshohocken. Merge onto Ridge Pike/SR 3056/State Route 3056. Continue to follow Ridge Pike. Pass by Outback Steakhouse (on the left in 0.4 mi) (3.5 mi).  Continue onto Ridge Ave. (0.2 mi). Turn left onto Bells Mill Rd.  Forbidden Drive Upper Parking Lot will be on the right.

Hike will be along the western shore of the Susquehanna River and feature trails along scenic streams with many small waterfalls, several stream crossings, numerous climbs and descents with some steep ascents and descents on switchbacks, numerous vistas of the river valley and trails through two State Game Lands

    Carpool: We can meet up in the Home Depot parking area behind the Arby’s Restaurant  (800 Commons Drive Parkesburg, PA 19365) to carpool with a 7:00 AM departure, maximum number of hikers per car is 2 since this a shuttle hike.

    This is a joint hike with Tyler Arboretum members, and members of the public are also invited to participate. Tyler membership, a guest pass, or payment of entry fee is required. Admissions are: Adults (ages 18-64): $18; Seniors (65+), and Veterans: $15; Military, and children ages 3-17, and students with valid ID: $10; Tyler members - Free.     Directions:  From South, follow Route 202 North towards West Chester. Turn right onto Route 926 and follow to traffic light at S Concord Road. Turn left at light and follow S Concord to Oakbourne Park and mansion on left, 1014 S Concord Rd. Turn left into park and follow road around to Mansion - park in lot to the right of the mansion.

    From North, follow Route 202 South to S. Matlack St light. Turn Left onto S. Matlack St (FedEx is on right). Follow S Matlack street (it curves around to the left downhill along park, then bears right at bottom of hill where it becomes S Concord Rd; Oakbourne Park entrance will be on your right, 1.1 miles from Route 202). Turn right into park entrance and follow road around to Mansion - park in lot to the right of the mansion.

     Hike will be on varied paths; half mile paved path in the park, quarter mile on railroad track, some grass and paved paths skirting the high school, and walking through some residential streets. Some gentle slopes.

    This is a joint hike with Tyler Arboretum members, and members of the public are also invited to participate. Tyler membership, a guest pass, or payment of entry fee is required. Admissions are: Adults (ages 18-64): $18; Seniors (65+), and Veterans: $15; Military, and children ages 3-17, and students with valid ID: $10; Tyler members - Free. Fort Delaware is nestled along the Delaware River, this former Civil War camp held thousands of Confederate solders. If time permits, we may travel to Fort Dupont off of Route 9 or wander around the village of Delaware City. Those who would like can stay for lunch as a group  or on their own.  .

     Directions:  from Route 352, go North on Gradyville Road for 1 mile; turn  onto South Sandy Flash Road ( Park Entrance) and make a right onto the first road. Proceed to the upper parking lot.  Bring water and snacks.

    Meet Hike Leader George March, 610.384.3753 (H), at 9:30 AM in the area behind the Arboretum’s Visitor Center for a hike exploring the Arboretum’s outer, inner, and connecting trails.

    This is a joint hike with Tyler Arboretum members, and members of the public are also invited to participate. Tyler membership, a guest pass, or payment of entry fee is required. Admissions are: Adults (ages 18-64): $18; Seniors (65+), and Veterans: $15; Military, and children ages 3-17, and students with valid ID: $10; Tyler members - Free. To expedite entry processing through the Visitor Center, Tyler is requesting pre-registration from their Website’s Event Calendar page (https://tylerarboretum.org/calendar).  CCTC does not have a registration requirement; there is no limit on the number of hikers. The gate to the parking lot opens at 9:00 AM; park in the lot. Sign in with the hike leader on the Club’s sign-in sheet then check in at the Visitor Center window. Proceed to circle-up at 9:30 AM on the grass area in front of the Barn.

    Directions: From West Chester travel south on route PA 352 (Middletown Road), turn east (left) onto Forge Road to merge with Painter Road, then 400 yards south to entry gate and parking lot on the left.
